The Laramie Project is Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project's theatrical reaction to the 1998 murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. The murder is widely considered to be a hate crime motivated by homophobia.

The play draws on hundreds of interviews conducted by the theatre company with inhabitants of the town, company members' own journal entries and published news reports, data and documentation. It is divided into three acts, and an ensemble of actors portrays more than sixty characters in a series of momentary scenes and monologues.

The Laramie Project is often used as a method to teach tolerance and thwart prejudice in personal, social, and health education classes in schools.

The Laramie Project will be the last of three full productions mounted this winter. The Laramie Project will be joined by 12 Angry Men and Noel Coward's Private Lives.
